Lake salt, also known as rock salt, is a sodium chloride-based substance used for melting ice. It comes in granular form, making it easy to spread over icy surfaces. When applied, it forms a brine solution that lowers the freezing point of water, causing the ice to melt. Widely used for road and sidewalk maintenance in cold weather, it is effective above its eutectic point of around -21.1°C (-6°F). However, excessive use may have environmental implications, leading to soil and water pollution.
